How the Greatest Cities Have Evolved
In the past, settlements whose populations grew too large often turned into cities by accident. Of course the original location was very specific: an area that’s easily defended, near a river or on a hill that has access to resources or routes of transport, as resource gatherers needed areas to sleep, eat and store things. This meant infrastructure slowly built up through improvisation and desperation, and over time this was built upon, refined and further added to.
Today, cities are built on purpose, but they are also built smarter, more logically and with better knowledge of humans and their behaviour. Often new cities are built in ways to direct and navigate people through open spaces, or to minimise the time people spend in public areas.
In our infographic we take a look at some of the most impressive cities from around the world and how they’ve evolved over time.
