Just an hour from Dubai by plane, Oman is the perfect note on which to end a Middle Eastern holiday. Swim with wild turtles and seahorses, or climb to the top of Jabal Sham, or Sun Mountain, the highest peak in the Arabian Peninsula. See wild camels on the Dhofar Eastern Coast, and while away the nights at one of Oman’s top hotels: boutique, luxurious and indulgent, they’re perfect for winding down before returning to normality.
Start off in Oman’s capital city, Muscat, making sure to visit the historic area of Old Muscat, where you’ll find the Sultan’s Palace and old Portuguese forts. Muscat is home to a range of luxury hotels, including indulgent Arabian establishments. Amazing beaches, gourmet cuisine and evening entertainment are some of the best in the Gulf.
The spectacular mountains of the Western Hajar should be explored, as well as the off-road drive down through Wadi Bani Awf. Visit the largest fort in Oman, Bahla, while you’re there. Palm-fringed beaches meet visitors in Al Batinah, or for more dramatic landscapes, head to the Musandam Peninsula, where the Hajar Mountains collide with the ultra-blue waters of the Arabian Gulf. If you’re planning on seeing these steep-sided fjords, or khors, book onto a lazy river dhow cruise from Khasab.
Trek through vast desert (or fly!) to Dhofar, where desert sands meet subtropical cities. Monsoon rains cause lush greenery to grow, and impromptu rock pools and waterfalls form. Here you’ll be on the border of Saudi Arabia – and ready for your next Arabian adventure.
